Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a member of the cucumber family that grows wild in south-central China. Its benefits were first described in 1578 in one of China's most famous herbals, the Compendium of Materia Media (Ben Cao Gang Mu). Jiaogulan was regarded by the Chinese people as a strength and endurance enhancer, “like ginseng, but better.” In modern times, jiaogulan has been researched for its adaptogenic properties.
